Protein is the basic building block of tissues such as muscle, bone, hair and skin. The daily protein requirement varies according to individual factors and the World Health Organization recommends 0.8-1 grams of protein per kilogram for healthy individuals. After bariatric surgery, this requirement varies between 1-1.5 grams per kilogram depending on the type of surgery.
Since postoperative food intake is limited and low in calories, it can be difficult to meet the daily protein requirement. Without adequate protein intake, the risk of muscle loss and protein malnutrition increases. Therefore, additional protein supplementation (e.g. protein powder) and protein-rich foods should be consumed in the postoperative period.
Protein-rich foods suitable for bariatric surgery include lactose-free milk, buttermilk, kefir, yogurt, meat, chicken and fish. Since food intake is limited, protein intake should be monitored by a nutritionist.
Animal proteins provide more protein per serving than plant proteins, and some nutrients (vitamin B12, vitamin D, DHA omega-3 fatty acids, iron) can only be obtained from animal sources. Therefore, animal proteins should be preferred after bariatric surgery as every bite is of great value.
