DIET BEFORE BARIATRIC SURGERY

Patients should start a special diet treatment shortly before surgery. The aim of this weight-loss diet is to decrease fatty liver and, so that, size of the liver as liver fat is burned. In this respect, operation will be much easier for surgeons and duration of surgery shortens. Moreover, possible complications are minimized.

!!!Consuming hard/tough and fatty foods lastly before bariatric surgery may affect operation procedure.

  • You should start mash diet which is rich in protein, vitamin and mineral and devoid of fat, refined sugar 2 weeks before the operation. You should consume calf, lamb, chicken, turkey, fish meats cooked with various vegetables and mashed; in breakfast and refreshments you should eat grated cheese, milk, ayran, kefir, egg and with vegetables.
  • You should drink not less than 2.5-3 l water daily.
  • You should avoid oily, fried, pastry, sugar foods and acidic drinks.
  • You should start liquid diet 1 week before the surgery. In this period, you should consume meat and vegetables, eaten in mashed diet, in soup (liquid) form.
  • Don’t limit your meals as liquid foods are digested fast. Don’t wait until you have a headache and low glucose due to fasting, and frequently consume ayran, sugar-free herbal teas and soups.
  • You should start clear liquid diet 2 days before the operation. For 2 days, without amount limitation, boil meat types and vegetables without oil, flavor them with spices you like, sieve them and drink as you want.
  • Continue to drink milk, ayran, herbal teas and 1 glass of clear juice daily.

WHAT SHOULD I EAT AFTER OPERATION?

  • You will start to feed when your doctor deems it suitable.

    First Level: (1st and 2nd day)

    • For the first 2 days, clear liquid diet will be applied
    • For the first 2 days, you can drink water in small swallows.
    • On the second day, you can consume approximately a tea glass of milk every hour.
    • On the second day, you can prefer linden, unsweetened fruitless compote, fresh sieved juice (except for citrus fruits), broth, chicken broth except water.
    • Your drinks have to be neither too hot nor too cold.
    • You should drink liquid foods in small swallows and you should not use straws or bottles.
    • When you feel satiety, you should quit drinking the liquid.

PROHIBITIONS

Carbonated drink, Mineral water, Alcoholic drinks, All sugary drinks, Ready-to-drink juice, Full-fat yoghurt, ayran, milk, Caffeinated drinks, Oil and fried foods, Smoking, Dried fruit, Cooked rice, bulgur, pasta, Whole-wheat foods, Different types of bread, Acidic fruits like orange, grapefruit, Tomato paste and sauces, Pastry

Second Level: (from day 3 to 14)

  • Clear liquid diet will be applied.
  • Drinking rate should be 50 ml at a time, i.e. ½ tea glass. This amount can be increased gradually. However, if you feel stomach pain or nausea, you should not consume anything until it goes away.
  • In addition to clear liquid diet, you can prefer skimmed and lactose-free milk, plant milk, vegetable juices, lactose-free buttermilk, lactose-free kefir, low-fat pureed vegetable soups.
  • Oil and lemon juice should not be added to soups.
  • Prohibitions are valid also in this level.

Third Level: (Since 14th day until 1st month)

  • Mashed diet will be applied.
  • You should consume solid foods blended.
  • The 30-minute rule, which you should pay attention to during this period and for the rest of your life, is starting to recognize the solid-liquid difference. Liquid and mashed food should not be consumed at the same meal.
  • In addition to liquid diet, you may prefer soft-boiled egg, fat-free cheese, soft fishes, minced meat, mashed fruit, mashed vegetables such as carrot, squash, string beans which do not form gas.
  • You should not consume raw vegetables.
  • Meal quantity should be less at first, then you can increase it gradually. You can start with 1-2 tablespoon and increase it afterwards.
  • Foods should be consumed slowly and should be chewed completely. Every meal should last about 30 minutes.
  • Do not lie down right after meals.
  • Prohibitions are valid also in this period.

Fourth Level: (30th -45th days)

  • It is a granular soft diet.
  • You can consume red meat, white meat and fish. But you should avoid fibrous tough meats, chicken skin and hard-to-chew vegetables.
  • Liquid should be stopped 30 minutes before meals and you should not consume any liquid during and 30-40 minutes after meals.
  • You should pay attention to meals to be rich in protein.
  • Even though you don’t feel fasting you should not miss any 3 main meals and 3 refreshments.

Fifth Level: (45th and 60th Days)

  • You are at regular diet level.
  • You can try legumes slowly.
  • You can now drink regular milk instead of lactose-free milk.
  • You should not consume cereals like rice, bulgur, pasta for the first 6 months as they are hard-to-digest.
  • You should not consume foods rich in oil and sugar.
  • You should definitely avoid convenience food.
  • You should make sure that high-protein foods (meat, chicken, fish, eggs, cheese, milk and dairy products) are your priority.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS AND RULES AFTER OPERATION

  • Patient should pay attention to SOLID-LIQUID FOOD DIFFERENCE. Liquid should not be consumed during, 30 minutes before and after meals.
  • Avoid carbonated drinks lifetime.
  • For the 1st month, don’t consume spiced, gas-producing (legumes, raw vegetables) foods.
  • For the first month, don’t consume too hot or too cold foods.
  • Don’t eat fried foods after operation.
  • You should not consume cereals like rice, bulgur, pasta for the first 6 months as they are hard-to-digest.
  • Your priority should be protein, and protein should be consumed at every meal.
  • Avoid hazelnut, almond and nuts until the end of the third month.
  • As dried fruits are fibrous and adhesive, don’t consume them for the first month.
  • As citrus fruits such as orange, mandarin, grapefruit are acidic, don’t consume them for the first month.
  • Eat slowly and chew completely.
  • If you try a food for the first time, don’t eat it with other foods. If it disturbs you, try it again 1 week later.
  • Try to gain health diet habit. If you keep being careful for a while and return to your old habits, it will cause you to regain your weight. Therefore, your aim should be to eat healthy and make it a habit.
  • You may have problems while consuming some foods. Don’t consume foods that disturb you for a while. Try again later.
  • Record your food consumption. Keep a notebook or notepad always with you and write down the foods you eat. It will be easier to control yourself and it help your dietitian to control you
